EXPLORING AND ENHANCING THE USER EXPERIENCE FOR TELEVISION
A Workshop at CHI 2013
Call for position papers
This workshop seeks to increase the volume and quality of HCI research and innovative practice around user interfaces for television. Internet connectivity is driving a rapid increase in the range and scope of interactive experiences on the TV platform and it represents an exciting new opportunity for developing new HCI practice and methodology, as well as innovative forms of user experience.
We invite academics and practitioners experienced in this topic to submit a
2-4 page position paper
(in CHI Extended Abstracts format) plus a short bio by email to
18th January 2013
in order to participate in this one-day workshop.
Your position paper should attempt to address one or more of the following:
- The connected TV has brought up the notion of producing interactive content on a traditionally passive device. What are the challenges in producing both hardware and software based remotes which can cope with the user’s demand for ‘interaction’? How can increasingly lean-forward experience be balanced in the design of remotes with the traditional story-telling lean-back type of behavior users associate with the TV? How can we facilitate interaction and remote control from users with accessibility requirements and those who use assistive technology? Discussion of the pros and cons of having hardware remotes and the tangibility of physical devices in conjunction with their familiarity versus flexibility and open-to-personalization aspects of software based remotes on popular (already in use) mobile/companion devices.
Content Discovery and Engagement on Second Screen
- Recently, there has been an influx of second screen experiences on the market even to the extent in which the second screen holds almost the same level of importance with respect to content and even more with respect to engagement through more interactive content. What are the challenges in producing holistic experiences when they involve more than one screen? How are the users’ cognitive attention to the content across multiple screens managed? How are users made aware that the content for companion devices exist in the first place? In increasingly coupled and synchronized experiences, how are the transitions between screens managed in a seamless manner.
Discovery of Devices (architecture)
- Even if content is made available, what are the enabling technologies available to facilitate discovery of devices and allow synchronization of content between the devices to ensure seamless experiences? If companion devices, web-sites and web-services, and merchandise (interactive toys) control the experience on the TV, such as content selection and control of playback on the TV (software remotes). How to start engagement with an experience from any of the following: the (mobile) Web, with emphasis on mobile (including tablet), TV broadcast, video-on-demand, or companion app? Also there are issues of authorization and authentication that need to be dealt with under the bonnet.
Social Network and User Generated Content
- Social networking sites are naturally platforms which enable users to share content and opinions. How can this behavior be leveraged to provide information on analytics and create novel user experiences? How can users engage with content together using social networks and perhaps even engage with the broadcasters and/or content deliverers.
Personalization and Recommendations
- Fostering effective recommendations and uncovering previously unseen content to users is a challenging task considering the number of variety in content available to the user and the number of sources from which the same content can be accessed. Are content filtering, collaborative filtering and social recommendations effective? How can serendipitous discovery exist in conjunction with personalized recommendations? With the popularity of user profiles and social graphs so easily available, how can it be used to aid content discovery through recommendations?
Please note that workshop participants must register for the workshop and for one or more days of the CHI 2013 conference. Workshop fees for participants in 2013 are estimated to be $175 for a one-day workshop.
